Brickbond pattern?????

Wonder if some one could answer my query.
Right..........I've read on several other threads that when you do a brickbond pattern then you have more chance of the tile lipping? Could someone please explain why this is the case and any precautions i would take if i was to ever do one?

Hi chris..

If you do not get each corresponding row flat and there are dips/rises etc in the rows then seen as each tile crosses the next one then the low/high spot will show as a kick in the tile.........

I have a garage floor to tile next week.

Tiles are 600 x 300 porcelain, and I'd hazzard a guess the customer will want brickbond, but the house is built on a steep incline with a very steep drive and the garage floor has quite a dramatic slope from the rear to the garage door where the drive starts.

Over all the floors surface is quite even and flat, but not level by any means.

From the rear of the garage to the garage door theres over a house brick difference in the level of the floor sloping down wards.

Brickbond may look quite bad with this kind of incline in the floor I think.

If a tile is not flat then it tends to be either slightly convex or concave in nature. If you tile a standard corner to corner field this shows much less than if you brickbond where the corners and middle sections are adjacent.

Yes john very true mate.....and these tend to be the porcelain ones as well.....

I check them for this before fixing and if this is present then i advise a wider joint to overcome the problem or at least make them easier to work with......

I'd be inclined (no pun intended) to run the 600 across the incline rather than with it as I think that would tend to flatten the perspective. Although it'll also have an effect on how square or rectangular the garage feels I would imagine.

I'll probably drylay the garage first to get a rough idea on how things might pan out first, or just ley'em standard uniform in long straight lines :lol:

I'm constantly surprised how many people start a biggish job and don't dry fit or even just knock up a gauging rod to check how things will fall.

It's very rare I do a floor with out dry laying them first, and I never tile a full room without making a staff.

Cheers for the answers there people. When someone explains it then it seems quite obvious really. Anyway when/if i do one i will be sure to advise the customer of the potential of this happening but will now know how to maybe overcome/minimise this (wider joint grout or flatter walls!)
