Hi all need some advice. If your customer has bought their tiles and border tiles before you start work and you find out, as you are about to start work, that the border tiles are 8mm thick and the main tiles are 10mm thick, how do you pack out the border tiles to make sure they are flush with the main tiles.
I have been told you can buy pads 2mm thick to put behind tiles or is it just a case of adding more addy behind border tiles.

Hope you can help.

Some people pack out, i assume you are using cement based adhesive. 2mm shouldnt be any hassle or you could use
Mosaic Tile Mesh - Home Page
or
SUPA PRO Tile Spacers and Accessories - THE TILE SOURCE

If it is, depending where border is going, eg. dado tile bottom half first, fix border, leave over night. Then tile top. Good luck:thumbsup:

OR
Fix bottom half - measure height of border - use baton or spacer template the size of your border (+ the joints top/bottom) - tile top half - remove template - fix border.
If your using a fast set adhesive get it all done in a day and then go home!
With the different thickness of tiles just build out with extra adhesive the 2mm.

if you get the chance, carry a few strips of 6mm ply in your van because they are ideal for making depth gauges for areas that need building out ie border thinner than the field tile..

you can notch out the depth of the tile and adhesive and run the piece of ply along the tiles scraping of the excess adhesive where the border is to be fitted leaving you the finished depth. some tilers use pieces of tile but i prefer wood so that you minimise the chance of scratching the tile when you run in along...

yes mate. thats general problem. u goin to have put some extra adhisive. but make sure dont build any tile on top till next day. gud luck. isa

Mark out the room , plus where the border goes. Tile lower area, tile opper area pinning with nails to your line. The next day, make yourself a ply template to the depth of the adhesive to go in the border recess, skim in addy, level out with your template, fix in the borders, press in place.......behold a level tile & border..SORTED!

Looks like I need to get in the shed and start making some templates. Thanks for the advice guys been a real help as always.
