what are the current rules on learning to ride a motor bike ?I did my CBT back in 2006 but I am guessing it has expired and have a moped gathering dust in my garage I want to get it back on the road this summer as its a fun way to get through the traffic when pricing jobs up in London .

This should help you Gary..... https://www.gov.uk/ride-motorcycle-moped/overview

I lose track nowadays what the rules are but all depends what age you are, if you have a car licence and when you passed it. The CBT only lasts two years also.

Bikes are in my blood and off to Europe on a borrowed BMW again in less than 4 weeks

you need to re-take your c.b.t mate then your free to ride for 2 years by then you need to have complete your bike licence or your c.b.t will be useless and you will have to wait a while until you can take it again, im also thinking about getting a bike

Good luck riding around London Gary....
I did it for about 14 months until my bike needed mot shoved it in garage and there it has stayed I will get it fixed up and get back out on it this summer should look funny a 15 stone 6ft 2 45 year bloke on a moped lol

I did the direct access course Gary, about 15 years ago now and that let me by-pass the cc limits and allow me to ride whatever size bike I wanted.

I passed my bike test 31 years ago....just rode round the streets watched by some bloke stood on the corner....half the time he couldn't even see me....lol

how things have changed....

You don’t need to take compulsory basic training (CBT) to ride a moped if you passed your car driving test before 1 February 2001. You’ll still need to complete CBT to ride a motorbike,

Do your Direct Access and do away with the 33bhp restriction for 2 years. 33bhp is no craic when you can have 100

a very lucky, or unlucky (depending how you see it) today. I was at our road end waiting to pull onto the main A65 and see the bike 200 + yards off, so I stop 10 yards short of the give way line, bike comes round a sweeping right hand bend and gets a tank slapper on and loses control 30 or so yards from me, both biker and bike hit me with the biker ending up under the side step of my pick up, the bike hits my front wheel, wing and the front of my pick-up. Nothing worse than opening my door and not knowing what I was gonna find, biker was unconcsious at first but breathing (I checked whilst dialling emergency 999), police and ambulance seemed to take an eternity to arrive, luckily there was plenty of witnesses that stopped and helped with the traffic etc and giving statements to police. Biker seemed compas mentis when they took him off to hospital in ambulance. Not too sure about my pick-up though.

I went round to biker's house after work today, but he's still in hospital. Broken femur, broken shoulder, 4 broken ribs and some spine damage
:yikes:, apparently (according to his neighbour) he lost control whilst swerving to avoid a rabbit.

this is courtesy vehicle I've been given! do you think other road users might see me now???
