Just for clarity, I've always called trowelling back of a tile with serated edge "back buttering" and trowelling it with flat edge "back skimming", if that makes sense:thumbsup:

I tired a slightly different method today to my normal back buttering, after watching another tiler use it and discussing it with him. Notched floor and back of tiles (600 ceasar stone)8mm on floor 4mm on tile and cross bonded, the sub floor was slightly out and this method made light of it.
Also most adhesives have max deph of about 5 mm as was said don't cross bond no air pockets solid bed

It was meant 8mm 4mm on tile 4mm on floor. And adhesive was good to 12mm, as i said the floor was a little out and the extra few mm got me over it.
regarding the air pockets never gave it a thought, I think I shall be returning to my tried and tested!

What adhesive was that?

really,5mm,im surprised,as not every floor is completely flat, and we should always use a 10mm trowel or more on floors

No need for back buttering when you use dot & dabs 😉 fails every time 🙂

 back butter every tile , wall or floor, all the time. gives much better bond. plus if you do 10mm natural stone (white marble etc) in wet rooms, when walls/floor get wet, dots will show.
