No upset caused, I value your opinion. I think half my rant was aimed at myself for being both naive and presumptuous. My work is based 90% on recommendations, and in all honesty most clients give me free reign to do the job as it needs doing. We agree a day rate for extras at the start and go from there. I realise now that with these particular customers (neighbours, friends or otherwise) a more formal agreement should have been set up. The joinery was supposed to have been done by their cousin but I was asked to do it while I was there. Foolishly I presumed they be happy to pay me to do it. Whereas it seems the cousin was doing it as a favour, they presumed I'd do the same. As stated previously, a lesson learned. Thankfully for both sides there's not alot of money involved. Not kicking anyone!
Just my opinion on your original post.
As others have said - it was an estimate, any change should have been provided in writing and agreed just the same.
They come to a professional tiler for a professional job, they shouldn't have to pay for naivety like additional adhesive and self levelling , if you price it up that's it's cost.
Again just my opinion certainly not meant to cause upset!
