Im going to be laying travertine onto a bathroom floor. the guy has already bought the ply it's only 9mm. i,ve told him it aint thick enough and i cant guarantee the tiles or grout wont crack, but he is insisting i use it, what would you do?

cheers, Edd

Hi Eddie
so someone is going to the expense of refitting his bathroom with Travertine and hiring a professional tiler - only to ignore advice at the first opportunity? What is the reason for insisting on 9mm - to save money or keep the floor height down? You have options - tell him you can do it, but obtain a signed disclaimer that he ignored advice on the ply thickness - hence no guarantee, walk away ( it only takes one bad job to ruin your reputation), or convince him of the need for at least 15mm (or whatever you insist on). Me? I'd tell him that I wasn't prepared to lower my spec for the job and to find someone else.
Best of luck

You could suggest hardi backerboard if height is an issue. Comes in 6 & 9mm. It's easy to lay as well.

Wouldn't risk it. It's your rep thats at stake.

If you do go ahead then do as Frogeye says and get him to sign something to say he insisted on the 9mm ply and therefore you can offer no guarantee.

explain that the tiles will crack and if he still insists do as above, but h sounds stupid he should listen 2 the pro??

So if i use a two part fexi adhesive will that be ok? the prob is that she got the adhesive and gout free because her tiles were three weeks late. Could i put the latex additive into s,p,f rapid white adhesive?
