had a look at a kitchen floor last night. Chipboard down with 6mm ply on top which was for lino. would this be thick enough ply for ceramics ? seems very solid floor. thanks.

in my opinion 6mm ply should be avoided at all costs....failures happen because the screws that support the ply "pull through"on natural floor flex. min 12mm screwed 6" centres..for me......

no more ply would be ok then ? but its convincing the customer to fork out the cash as oppossed to ordinary ply which is also a pain to install compared to no more ply. dittra a possibilty ?.

i personally would remove ply and re ply in 12mm....if this is a prob then dietra is my second choice.....i have used no more ply but you must glue and screw this product.......you must use polyeurothane glue and screw with thier "special" screws to get a gaurentee.........
i dont like it......full stop........
however there are cheaper alternatives to dietra.....check out durabase on google........i have used their alternatives and must say i was v. impressed...

Did a search for Durabase and 1st hit was a saucepan set on Ebay ??? You use some strange kit down south:whatchutalkingabout

the company name is dural.....my bad, the product is durabase......tell dan it will be a great sponsor!!!!!!!anyway.....soz. wrong link.......(edited) contact dural and ask for a supplier in your area and ask for thier equivilent of schuler dietra......

Some peeps keep thinking Ditra is a replacement for plying..it isn't....
Timber floors should be solid before using Ditra....it is designed as a decoupler for problematic substrates..like cracked concrete..green concrete..wet-rooms etct .etc..

Plywood and particle board (OSB)
These materials are particularly prone to deformation under the influence of moisture (or significant changes in atmospheric humidity). The plywood or OSB panels used in construction should therefore be exterior grade. In principle, plywood and OSB can be used as backing materials for Schlüter-DITRA on both floors and walls in interior applications. The thickness of the panels must be sufficient to ensure stability in conjunction with a suitable supporting construction. Attach the panels with screws set at the required minimum spacing. The joints must feature tongue and groove connections and should be secured with additional adhesive. Movement joints of at least 10 mm must be left at the transition to other construction parts. Schlüter-DITRA neutralises the stress occurring in the tile covering and prevents the penetration of moisture.

Structural plank flooring
Sufficiently load bearing structural plank subflooring in tongue and groove construction, with the appropriate screws in place, in principle is suited as a substrate for ceramic tiles. The timber substrate should have reached the equilibrium moisture content prior to installing Schlüter-DITRA. However, an additional layer of plywood or OSB panels is recommended. Uneven floors must be levelled using an appropriate levelling compound.

soz. dave but as you pointed out earlier....(where did he say 4mm ply(another post)) he said the floor was solid, and therefore dietra (or dura) is perfect!

p.s i did say replace with 12mm (min)

regards

Hi lee.. i again didn't say it couldn't be used..I said it is not a REPLACEMENT for PLY....If the floor is structurally sound then yes use it.....My post above is just info for this thread in case peeps THINK Ditra can be used instead of ply......no dig at your INFO so lighten up.....

hey no offence taken...sometimes on posts (non conversations) peeps can get the wrong idea.....i know you know your stuff dave....it was mearly an interject!!!!!!

p.s Dave is absolutly right......ditra/dura is not a substitute for a solid floor,
its mearly a seperation (decoupler) membrane....
if the floors not solid.....DONT USE DIETRA/DURA!!!!!!!!!!!

lol, I forgot what the question was now... lemme go back a page and look again....

Ohh... yeah...

I wouldn't ever use 6mm ply, 6mm hardibacker boards if the floor was secure enough in the first place.
