Why use tanking compound?!?

Deep breath in case I get shot to pieces but while doing my last bathroom I did my usual tape and 2 coats tanking compound on the plasterboard around the bath. The tanking kits aint cheap and seeing as I always use waterproof adhesive it got me thinking - is tanking really necessary ? Any pro tilers got any thoughts on this?

if you are going to use the bath as a shower as well you need to tank the walls

I am redoing my bathroom. The bath had a shower over. The tiling was 45 years old - not tanked. I know that for the last 20 years the shower has been used most days. There were no tile problems.

Tiles were onto sand cement render layer with adhesive.

Plasterboard was not available forty five years ago easyt, many people use the stuff in their bathrooms nowadays and its for that reason that modern up to date tanking solutions are available.
Many people used to drive their cars with solid tyres and laughed at the idea of inflatable ones, I know which version I would prefer.........

I was not imtending to tank the walls this time just rapidset onto the render and a 'waterproof' powder mix grout. Am I being unwise ?

grout isn't waterproof. it will eventually break down over time. the same with adhesive.

if water gets in behind the tiles, it will break down the grout or the adhesive from behind. having a tanking layer between the tiles and plasterboard is like having a goalkeeper on a football pitch
