Which order and what is correct????

Tilers Forums Official Sponsors

Hey
So I’ve added a dormer onto my house and have Green chipboard as the new flooring.
I have bought an underfloor heating mat to take the chill of the portiles.

is this the correct order:

chipboard
Tile backer board
Heat mat
Tile adhesive
Tiles and grout
My friend has mentioned a ditra mat for waterproofing but I’m a complete novice (albeit I’m eager to learn and defo do it myself)

do I need a ditra mat?
Is it the correct order?
How do I secure it, will tacks do??

Any advice much appreciated

Leanne 😊

Hello there. The chipboard needs to be fully screwed down and secured to the joists.....not a floating floor. Prime the chipboard with the primer to go with your chosen adhesive and allow to dry. You're best laying 10mm tile insulation boards next....onto a thin bed of tile adhesive...stagger the board joints. I usually leave to dry then lay the mat where its going and use screws and insulation board washers to fix down through the mat and boards....around a dozen per 1200 x 600 board. This holds everything down for a coat of self levelling to just cover the wires of the mat. You can then tile onto this.....or if your floor is big or in a wet room you could put down a ditra or similar mat. If its a dry room or has a seperate shower tray you dont really need a mat....up to you. Unless you know whats under the chipboard.....use screws that wont pierce any pipes or cables etc...I usually use 30mm ones....22mm chipboard + 10mm boards + adhesive.
