Re: Worst accident

putting some ply down and went though hot water cold water and gas pipe. water everywhere leaking though new ceiling in kitchen, house nearly blew up. thankfully it didnt and to my amazement got paid for the job with no hard feelings

Re: Worst accident

I was tiling a kitchen ( fully tiled)...and i was standing on the work top ( using dust sheets) and tiling above the window , i must have forgot momentarily i was on the work top coz i stepped back to see if the tile was lined up ok and stepped straight off the work top and ended up sprawled out on the kitchen floor....FAF..pleased i was only one in the house.....

Apart from that just the usuall cuts and nicks from tiles....

Re: Worst accident

tried to snap a ceramic tile on the side of my cutter box as my breaking handle had snuffed it. Didnt quite work out as planned as the tile snapped to a point going straight through the palm of my hand.... nearly out the other side!!Not nice, had a red water fountain coming from my palm!! luckily it missed all the muscles and nerves. Had an op to remove bits of tile, stitched me up and was back to work a week later.

Re: Worst accident

As a young resident engineer on a site we hit a 22inch gas main with a JCB bucket and it caught fire - now that was an interesting afternoon !

Re: Worst accident

I ripped my hand open yesterday cleaning my trowel.

Claret was everywhere............bit of bog roll...........masking tape.........back to work.

Oh...........I spilt my coffee this morning........:whatchutalkingabout

Well i was alone in this bathroom once and i felt the urge to fart but when i let rip it wasnt a fart........... Oh not that sort of accident eh?

only a couple of nicks whilst tiling, but have fell off my staging a few times when skimming ceilings....can be painful.. many years ago I cut my thumb in two..right down the middle on a bandsaw, the nail now grows in 3 pieces...Mark.

Most life threatening was from a client who accused me of turning his white stone bathroom that i had just finished into a gaudy yellow colour and his wife was promising her husband would literally kill me when he got back into country.

Seeing as I had already seen him knock a local builder off his roof with a flying breeze block and given the locals permission to put all his peacocks in the evening stew coz one of them shat on the stone tiles overnight, I thought I should get the real culprit away to safety before i flew out in case he really found out what happened.
The security guard had lit a bonfire on the stone floor with the door closed to keep warm and had a party and a few big duuffers to celebrate his cosy new dwelling.
This was quite normal in his environs but I guess he didnt have cream limestone at home on his walls to stain like nicotine.
I called the Cape Town stone doctor and did a runner.

Johnny

According to statistics released, 700 people died on site 2007/08, 90% were on home conversions/ renovation work......

Nothing tile related. But I used to be a submariner and whilst on the way to the persian gulf after 911 I was on board the sub when a fire broke loose. Alarms start ringing and I crawls out my bunk bed when the 16 stone sailor above me dropped onto my neck and cracked 4 of my vertebrae; paralyzed from the ears down for around 4 long days. Then the swelling went down and the pain kicked in.

Best bit was, all the time I was injured I was left to sleep in a torpedo sling 🙂 Eventually I was air lifted to a hospital and later made a full recovery, still wake every morning with massive pain though.

I reached in the grill of my old car (205gti) on hot day to pop the bonnet.

Two factors came into play;
1) I missed the catch and stuck my fingers right into the grill

2) The engine was hot and the fans came on automatically

the result was two missing finger nails and two shortened fingers!

Tiling-wise: I was stood on a kitchen worktop, drilling into a wall above a socket. The shock threw me backwards off the worktop and flat on my back on the floor. My arms ached all day afterwards! I knew not to drill within 90degrees of a socket but some cowboy sparkie *** builder had put the cable in at 45degrees! I bought a good cable detector the same day.

can't remember how many times i've fallen backwards off my steps........... probably because i've fallen backwards off my steps. :whatchutalkingabout

Last year in november fell off my platform which i did not open properly and really fell on my tools that hurt was off work for 2 days my breaker off the cutter got caught in my ribs

Face fell in bucket of adhesive and leg also hit bucket of water was a rite mess in customers house thankfully job was only a £200 1 day job so

In the end did job for nowt A week later......................

Worked out well though as customer got bath tiled shortly after lol must of been shympothy vote or my lovely cute dimples

Lots and lots of small cuts and bruises, but as for more serious stuff?

Slipped and fell fown a flight of stairs a few years ago, cracked my tailbone, got a hairline fracture in my right kneecap, BADLY bruised my left kneecap, and sprained a few things.

Busted my right elbow pretty bad when I slipped and fell two metres of a scaffold onto a pile of rocks early last year.

Etc..

I've had some funny injuries though, like when I was training Aikido and got thrown headfirst into a metal doorframe. Hit so hard the paint peeled off. Bled like a pig, but didn't even get a headache, though I was pretty disoriented for a few seconds. Still have the scar, and I've been nicknamed "Mr. Potter" for it, as it looks like a lightning bolt 🙂
Another time, I was out taking a stroll, minding my own business, and all of a sudden, a baseball bat flew out of nowhere and struck me straight in the noggin. Chipped some teeth, had the mother of a headache afterwards...

Also had a bicycle accident when I was 15, resulted in a 2 day hospital stay. Was in a real hurry, was on my way to buy my father a birthday present (it was his birthday that very day, heh), and was going real fast. Then my handlebars came off... Lost control, hit the curb, flew headfirst into a garden wall, made from slate. Must've blacked out, cuz the next thing I knew, I had ants all over me. Again, bled like a pig from my head; no helmet, hehe. Damn wall lay broken all over the place... Dad said he couldn'tve asked for a better birthday present than me surviving an accident with a mere concussion, hehe.

Cheers.

Re: Worst accident

Wost accident was when one of my clients has fallen from a short ladder into his tile disposal. He ripped his left hand and under arm and can´t use it any more correctly. He had to give up tile laying. Martin

When starting out as newbie, had angle grinder clamped in workmate cutting ceramic tiles...the carborundum disc shattered and sliced across my thumb. What a bloody mess.....was only next door to Chorley hospital so went to A & E and had it cleaned with a brush(scrubbed) and stitched up. Went back to customers house and it looked like there had been a murder ! got a really good scar from that day...I borrowed some cash and bought a wet saw for my next job!
other injuries include...slashed with stanley knife....whacking fingers with hammers....kneeling on nails.....sawing across knuckles and twising ankles jumping off worktops lol.....oh and cracking head open around extractor hoods with the mitred pelmets, ..Oh and once pinned to the wall by the customers 21 yr old daughter....was sore for days!!
