Thinking of taking the boys to Legoland at Windsor for their birthdays, so rather than drive all that way Mrs Doug suggested we get the train,,,,,,,,looked up tariffs for a return trip (2 adults and 1 kid, Gabriel would go free as he'd still be still under 5) and it came to £753!!!!:yikes::yikes:. Did a google map planner and estimated fuel cost would be just under £100. looks like I'll be having a long drive!

You could buy a good cutter for that money..

And the goverment wonder why they can't get us onto public transport:thumbsdown:

Dont book direct tickets.ie Kendal to Watford.Watford to Windsor. If you go though London at peak time that will also cost you more. From Canterbury to a London station is about one third of the price if the train arrives after 10 am or there abouts.

you should get a family railcard. they cost around 20 odd quid, but you get massive savings on fares with them. it'd probably pay for itself on your first trip. we use them all the time.

seems extremely high was that price through national rail inquires website?
I think so Gary, problem being that we'd have to travel at peak time to get there early enough for the two day package deal. there's virtually no difference in the travel time though, both about 4-1/2 hours, so will probs drive it.

iam takin the gran kids here doug in september

I would love to use the train for more journeys but the price is too high. I travel to Saltaire often, but by the time I get tickets and change train so often I could have driven there in the car and paid for fuel , out for a meal and drinks all weekend. !
I was going to the stone show in London a few months ago but train ticket prices were absurd !

last time i went to cardiff it was cheaper to hire a car and drive down and i got there quicker

Can you two keep it down in here, if the department of transport hear you they won't drop rail fairs, no you'll find a toll on every road

Doug

drive down with the caravan and camp at Hurley campsite between Henly on thames and Marlow, lovely part of the country, they film midsomer murders around there. you can take a tour of the cotswolds too, Boughton on the water is very picturesque

Doug i would catch a plane its next door to heathrow i always fly to scotland its a lot cheaper than the train
