Quick one on Hardibacker

Tilers Forums Official Sponsors

Hopefully a quick one. I’m laying 6mm hardibacker direct on floorboards, without wanting to screw through a waterpipe does anyone know roughly how thick floorboards will be ( I am not in a position to lift them between now and when the job starts). I’m hoping I can buy 16mm turbo screws and they will do the job. I’m spreading BAL pourable 1 as the adhesive to fill any voids.

Thanks.

Most floorboards are 22-25mm. If its the old non tongue and groove get a paperclip, straighten it out and then bend the last 5mm at a right angle. Slide it between the boards and twist until you feel the underside. Voila! You can work out the depth

I usually use 20mm -25mm screws dependent on thickness of floor boards.

16mm seems to small as 6mm board and adhesive there might not be enough screw to bite into floorbords

6mm Hardie glued and screwed with 25mm screws every time.
16mm won’t be long enough.

Some houses I’ve worked in have 15mm T&G. Average I work In is 18mm for T&G.

Usually it’s only above 18mm in the older floorboards.

25’s are the standard size screw used.

I’ve never worked in a house where I was unable to check the floorboard depth. There is always a way. Straight to the airing cupboard. Often loose boards there and always lots of pipes in holes.
