patchy plaster and unsquare walls

evening guys,i have to tile my mother in laws bathroom as a practise for me but the walls are full of patchy and flaky plaster, now should i rub down and skim over and if so what should i use as a skim,or will the adhesive fill all the holes and flaky patchy bits for me? cheers guys. oh and the walls run out how do you make up say a small gap at the bottom and a big gap at the top?:huh2:

alright mate you can do one of two things if the walls are true and flat i would remove the flaking plaster and a use good primmer then use a one coat plaster or a rapid set adhesive. If it was me mate i would get some sheets of no more ply 6mm thick or contruction board and fix to the wall, this will make it flat sound and very waterproof. And at 6mm your not really loosing much space.

If you using patching plaster, or one coat you really need to leave it at least 2- 3 days before applying tiles to it and that also depends on what thickness and other factors. Thats why a flexible rapid set speeds the job up.

Sorry mate i thought it was just patches. Board it, you make it flat and true and once tiled your be glad you did it.

You can tile on old plaster providing it's solid enough to take the weight of the tiles. So if it's flakey as in just a bit dusty flakey then you're ok providing you follow the normal tiling practice but if it's flakey as in falling off flakey then you need to sort it out.

I'd probably dot and dab plasterboard on the really dodgy walls and then use a but of the dot and dab mix to patch up the not so bad walls and tile it like that.

But the unsquareness of it isn't anything new. You'll never find a bathroom that is square enough to say it's perfect but you can tile it perfectly no matter what condition it's in.

You need to set out well. If you have a big gap at the top and your set out allowed you to go full tile at that point you'd simply be trimming the tiles as you go down the wall. But if you set it out wrong and had a full tile at the bottom you'd obvisouly end up with a gap at the top.

So you need to set it all out and get the best looking setout for all the uneven walls etc.

alright mate if you want to do it cheap get plaster board and stick with plaster board adhesive or a flexi rapid set tile adhesive. And then just prime with mapei mapegum and that will waterproof no need to skim

For hybrid boards such as tile backer board, aqua board, contruction board and no more ply they can be stuck with adhesive supplied by the maker.

For the best job mate i would go for contruction board its sound, water proof and has great thermal properties and costs about £8 per board and covers i think 0.9 sqm per sheet
