Afternoon All,
Please can you help

I have a couple of queries that i would appreciate you input on .

I am looking for clarity with regard to tile movement joints in a swimming pool. The pool in question is 25m in length but has no construction joints as it was poured in 1 hit . BS 5385 says the maximum tile field should be no more than 10m in each direction. but that it generally tends to be 5- 8 m for floor and 3-4m for walls. The architect that is on this particular job has only identified the movement joints as being 3- 4.5m apart but hasnt specified whether that is walls or floors.

I would also like to be able to compile a check list for future pools that we construct to enable others to concentrate on the important items that need monitoring , like the falls etc, movements joint distances/ loctations etc and would appreciate any input / pointers you guys may have regarding the important tiling issues faced when installing swimming pool tiles.

Hello kate and welcome....pools...not my field of expertise on joints...as mentioned dave ( gooner) is the lad for this...

I work for Gallifordtry. and in this climate we are being put to good use by reviewing previous projects and recently finished projects. We have one project which we have difficulties on and im trying to understand why on a 25m pool we would only have 4 movement joints. the subcontractor hasnt followed the spec but i have assume that there is a good reason for it . Unfortunately there are 'lifting ' issues with regard to the pool.

Hi and welcome to the forums.

Question : I assume when you say the pool was poured in one hit it was a concrete substrate. Why does the concrete have no movement joints?

kate what is the construction of the pool shell IE gunite/shotcrete/poured conc/ block ? is it monolithic ? was it constructed by pool professionals ? did it have ground water issues ? did it have a de-watering system? was it renderd/screeded ? was there expanstion joints in the construction of the shell? what addy/grout used? what tiles were used? when you say lifting issues ,in patches or random ? look forward to your next post
