Is this a poor finish?? Opinions please

Hi all,

hopeing to get some advice from the pros. I've completely gutted out bathroom and have been getting everything sorted before getting it tiled. As a background I have underfloor heating mats down and concrete.

Spent a fair bit on tiles from porcelainosa and got a tiler in who was recommended and charges out at xx per meter. I am a bit of a perfectionist and like things done right, and now the tiling is finished it's not quite perfect. But I'm hoping for opinions as to how I can fix it.

The main problem was the ceiling is sloping in the bathroom, and where the tiles are finished the guys grouted between the tiles and the bottom of the ceiling slope. Is this normal? As its looks rubbish, so i need to hide the fact the tiles are slightly different lengths and the grout is a different thickness.
Can I paint grout?



Blimey, those where quick replies! thats what I get for trying to do it on the ipad, couldnt seem to attach a pic. It doesnt look terrible by any stretch, I may be being very picky. But I've read that I cant paint grout, so the wobbly grout line is quite obvious. I'd have preferred a clean edging strip, but I'm guessing getting one of those put on afterwards is pretty much impossible?

I would have personally chamfered the back of the tile to the angle of the slope so the front of the tile meets the ceiling with a gap of 2mm left for a bead of silicon

I know its difficult without seeing the whole bathroom but was it not possible for him to set out so a full tile finished on the ceiling slope rather than a smallish cut like that?

Usually they're miles off - makes sense to keep the cuts the same rather than rake to the wonky profile of the ceiling. A bit of tile trim hides it a bit better though.

See what you're saying Pete dependant on how far ceiling is out, maybe I've just been lucky and not had one that was more than 5mm out over length of wall and it wasn't noticeable at all unless you measured it

That's why I'm thinking if I masked off along the top of the tiles and painted so at least the line is straight? Anyone know if I can paint the grout with ceiling paint?

The probs with sloping ceilings is the dodgy plastering.. so i like to mitre off the tile back to allow a closer fit... but what you have there is a tidy job but with a grout joint.. not the end of the world quality wise IMO..

mask the tiles off and cut in with paint..

The ceiling is brand new and very close to straight, a bit of an odd angle but I would expect a pro to handle that?

Yes.. cutting is not the best and can be rectified by your tiler... so give him a call and get it sorted if it bugs you ..

A good plasterer would yes.. but as usual it is down to the tiler to bonny the dog.

The right hand tile is 1 or 2mm short, that's why it's showing so much.

Personally I would have finished the top of that tiling with a trim, just think it's a neater finish.

As already stated the tiler should have mitred the cut so it finished tighter against the coombe ceiling if he wasn't using a trim.

OK , then just call your tiler back and get it corrected..

Was the ceiling sheeted with PlasterBoard?

If it is then it will be down a couple of mm where the tapes have been skimmed.

mitre cut into it would have been a good idea ,tiling can be fixed but i dont think your ceiling is flush either

hmm not sure size is right on that if you go onto my profile its under trav showerroom you can see better might give you a better option to finish than grout

Same advice as Peter, I would have stopped short of slope with same size of cut on each tile, any other way would look average at best with typical slopping ceiling

Last time I had a ceiling like this I discussed with customer which way he wanted it finished bearing in mind the junction wasnt straight. He chose a trim but when I'd done it we both agreed it didnt look good so I took the top row off and fixed new tiles scribed to the ceiling.

same as, I allways consult the customer see which way they want it finished, as there the ones that have to look at it every day, so imo theres no right or wrong way of doing it, just the way you prefer it. these types of sloping ceilings are seldom level, as Dave said its up to the tiler to make someone's poor work look right...........:smilewinkgrin:

Even with all the comments and advise the groutline could still of been better than that in the pic

Mitre backs and bring the rest of the joint in with the painted ceiling these sloping ceiling are a right pain, sometimes its the studs that are out but its always the tiler that gets the flak.

if the ceiling is way out i prefer to cut all tiles the same size , finish with a trim, then skim down to the back edge of the trim, some of these sloping ceilings are miles out, as mentioned its only when the tiles go on it becomes an issue

If it's abit out, they usually are, I mitre the backs for a better fit and then run the back off some trim and cement in place.

Retro fitting trim like this might be a solution worth considering.
