Tiling a kitchen, above the work surface is new plastered plastered board (gypsum based) that has been freshly painted with soft sheen emulsion over 70% of the area to be tiled. The remaining 30% is just unpainted new plaster.

Do I need to PVA it all>?

The adhesive I got from Al Murad just states 'tile primer', doesn't mention what type.

Bit worried now as when I did the floor I used a bit of PVA solution when I went over a section of screed/concrete!!!!

I wouldn't use PVA, but as you have done so, then I don't know.

Tile away and see what happens maybe

it all depends on the adhesive you use mate, bal recomend bal bond sbr or apd but aq lot of adhesives advise pva or sbr the staff at my local topps tiles backed me up on that this week. so just read the recomendations.

Oh well if Topps say its ok then it must be fine:lol:

Are they still recruiting from Billy Smarts Circus?

At the end of the day you will be wanting to put something on the walls before tiling and why take the risk. You may as well use APD.
Have you ever seen it written down "Do not use APD" ??? No i didnt think so.

i can not work this forum out you have it has recomended TOPPS TILES in past threads and now you r slating them. he seemed to know is stuff along with 3 other fitters who got into the conversation and all agreed BAL ARE 1 OF A VERY FEW THAT DO NOT RECOMEND PVA..SO I WOULD SUGGEST U ADVISE ON ALL PRODUCTS AND NOT JUST BAL.

sorry i did not mean you i meant the forum. it has recomended TOPPS TILES for advise and materials in the past.like i stated i use wat ever the manufacter recomends but mainly sbr but just saying a lot rec PVA .

I tell you what Floyd, on monday you call the tech advice of the adhesive manufacturers up and ask if they will send you a written guarantee that PVA is ok. I will be gobsmacked if they did.

YOU SEEM TO KNOW A LOT I SUGGEST YOU DO YOUR HOME WORK. IF THEY PRINT IT ON THE PACKAGING IT IS GAURANTEED:hurray: WHICH IT DOES. SO BE GOBSMACKED NOW.

Yeah and years ago they printed it but when the tiles all fell off they had to pay because it was proved by a seperate ombudsman that the PVA caused the failure.

I HAVE BEEN TILING FOR 17 YEARS AND WHEN PVA IS REC I WILL USE IT, IT IS WHEN U MIX IT TO THICK U GET THE PROBLEMS. I HAVE NEVER HAD A TILE FALL OFF.

sometimes you got to shout
cause some people r so thick :stupid: u need to do your home work  17 years is enough to advise and by the sound of it i am advising u cause u only know BAL.

Actually i rarely use Bal so you need to do your home work and if the years decide who is right or wrong then my 31 years should settle it....but i doubt it....as i say you carry on with the PVA.

31 YEARS YOU SHOULD KNOW ALMOST EVERYTHING. LIKE I STATEDIN A PAST THREAD ALL ADVICE IS ACCEPTED [IF RIGHT] PLEASE TAKE TIME OUT AND HAVE A LOOK AROUND ALL THE TILE STOCKIST AND NAME THEM. :mad2: I HAVE NAMED THEM AND DONE MY HOMEWORK THERE IS STILL A LARGE NUMBER OF ADHESIVES OUT THERE THAT REC PVA. GO AND LOOK AND PUT THEM ON HERE. [TUNNEL VISION]:hurray:

Ok, so if I score the area to be tiled and then prime with Mapei Primer G or BAL ADP I should be ok?

I really didn't realise you couldn't tile straight on top of emulsion. I kinda feel silly because we painted the walls BEFORE tiling, well, partly.

It seems very odd to me that it's considered OK for plasterers to use PVA prior to skimming a wall, but then a tiler who comes along afterwards and wouldn't use PVA.

Surely the same principle applies?

Surely the same principle applies?[/quote yes it does. when moisture makes contact with pva it becomes active again BUT A BIG BUT the adhesive or plaster dries and so does the PVA giving it the adhesive properties but it only works if mixed correctly. to many people on here r primer mad . follow the recs:hurray:

I ended up buying some BAL primer. I tried to get as much emulsion off as possible, but it was taking too long so I heavily scored it and primed both bare plaster and scored emulsion as directed.

It's amazing the number who tile suppliers who don't stock any kind of primer but sell everything else! I went to 4 shops before I got hold of some.

The fact that hardly anyone stocks it tells me, not many DIYers will be using it!

Neale u r very respect by many on the forum and ur word is religion in my eyes thank u:thumbsup:

Simple answer to this is you use Nicobond Unique, no primer required on plaster or plasterboard.

You lot spend so much time in Topps reading Bal bags you dont know whats going on in the world 😉

Some members would have recommended them, some wouldn't. It's a forum. Just like out there in the real world there are different opinions.

You'll get about the same % of the fixers on here supporting various companies just like on-the-job too, so you'll see a lot of Topps mentioned as they're the UK's largest tile store, and a lot of BAL mentioned as over 50% of the pro tilers in the UK use it.

Though we have support and representatives from Mapei, Weber, BAL, Larsen (though haven't posted for some time) and a few randoms like that lass from Johnsons Adhesive.

So please be steady when pointing that finger as one members comments isn't the view of the whole forum.
