How much would you quote for 13sqm of 600x400 slate - uncalibrated.
Onto ashphalt/concrete kitchen floor - lino adhesive residue to remove.
Tiles to be fixed brick-bond.
Customer also wants a hearth installing using old paving stones cut to size and then tiled on top and around the edges using the slate.

The reason I ask is I have recently quoted this at a reasonable rate and had an email from the customer telling me that she has had a quote of £390 including all materials.

Un-blinkin-believable.

If it's anyone on this forum - stop it lads, please! Don't chase the market down.:mad2:

i know exactly what you mean ive no work at the moment done 2 quotes since ive got back and both customers have said your way to expensive i even asked the customer what they quoted talk about being undercut

for the tiling alone i would go in at £500 inc mats not including removal of lino residue and other works its about just short of £40m2

id say to the customer let them **** on with it

People get what they pay for 'Dad. Pass on the job, you don't need the hassle that would be sure to follow....

I quoted £625 plus materials. Extra to be discussed if the floor needed more thorough smoothing. I wanted the job coz I like stone work. I advised the customer to check the other tiler carefully before letting him loose, and stressed that he must be either unbelievably good and fast or very desperate for work. Either way, I said I'm too busy to be prepared to work for that little.

thats good advice for your customer mark some people are just interested in a cheap job like you said he must be desperate or fast or he s probably a handyman you never know after what you told her you might receive a phone call asking you to do the job i wouldnt bet against it

Yea mate,

If you dropped your price to 390 then would your standard be the same ?? Doubt it.

is it worth getting out of bed for????i know i could nt work for that little, it would only just pay for me chippy dinner!!!

lets see 5 bage of rapidflex £80, Grout, primer, sealers and diesel. Say £110.

Then the labour , about 3 days. 90 quid per day (-tax). or if he/she can do it in 2 then 140 quid.

I dont think there is an other tiler.

I bet they call you back to do the work:thumbsup:

Dont know why there are so many suprised responses, the markets dead in alot of areas round the uk if i was a tiler and had bills coming in and was desperate for work and a chance of some money coming in your going to drop your prices and under cut every body and any body ! ITS BUSINESS,

How far do you undercut, It gets to the extreme where your actually working for nothing just about covering the overheads. In the last couple of months I've paid out a couple of grand on van insurance, servicing etc etc these have to covered over the year, Cutting to the bone does no one any favours.

I've just had a similar thing happen to me - Quoted a guy for 3 bathrooms & all through downstairs - total = 44m2 wall tiles & 70m2 floor tiles. Came back to me and said that he had got another quote at £1500 inc mats !!

Just going to wait for the call when the SOB needs it all sorting out.

Sorry mate - I understand your point but I have to disagree. The kind of people who undercut by STUPID amounts are either not in the game for the long term, or they are just too stupid to realise the damage they are causing to their own market. Sure, you can scrape a living when times get tough by doing this, but it simply kills the market for everyone in the future. Professional integrity should stop people undercutting wildly. I would undercut another tiler if I needed / wanted to, but not stupidly.

It's not business - it's irresponsible and it's desperate.

You can also pretty much guarantee that he's going to leave a trail of damage in his wake too.

Taz, I just worked out the floor at £25 m2 Say including the materials, Don't know what the tile is. As a standard thats £1750, Now thats taking it to the bone.

Love the aviator:thumbsup:

Same all over Dad, 16m2 marble floor(bathroom & kitchen) on concrete floor/16m2 bathroom walls and 4m2 kitchen s/b. £700. Didn't c the job as i told them i would be dearer than that. £700 your having a laugh, and thats with mats. :joker:

Customers read newspapers and are hoping for the cheapest quote we all know that were not going to earn any money on these kind of prices, It will pass, been down this road in the last reccession

I got the call this morning asking me to book the job in!
Any chance you could pick some lottery numbers now Charlie?!!
glad you you got the job graces dad , had to have my say tho i think as time goes on pricing will fluctuate from one extreme to another and go down to levels that wont agree with everybody especially in the economical climate that were in at the moment

Pricing will always be erratic, and rates will drop with the current financial climate. Work is work, and bills have to paid. I don't agree with stupid pricing, but it happens all the time now and will probably get worse.

Good for you Dad for you sticking to your guns and i think you giving the customer warning regarding the cheao quote had the alarm bells ringing....

:hurray: Nice one dad.

I Think a lot of customers are trying it on with the "Oh, I've had a quote at such and such, which is much cheaper" are just taking the pi55 and that in itself is going to get worse.

Punters are not daft............but they are crafty

Glad you got the job, this should highlight the fact that no one needs to give it away even if desperate for work.
