Apprenticeships/Trainee jobs?

Hi all, I'm new here so apologies if this line of questioning gets asked every other day!

I am 26 and I have decided I want to give up my office job and train as a Tiler. I know that I am too old to get taken on as an apprentice so I was curious as to how all of you would suggest I get myself started.

I see a lot of people recommend the North East Tiling Training Centre which I am going to try to book myself on asap (what is the waiting list like for this?)

Is there any qualification that potential employers would look for specifically?

Any help anyone could give me would be much appreciated.

Hiya jus thought id drop you a message, I was trained at north east tiling and it is really good! you will learn everythink you need to know to even start your own business! you dont jus get told how to put a tile on the wall you get told so much more! and as for the booking there very popular but if you give them a ring Tracey wil explain the course to you, answer your questions and try her best to fit you into the week you want! 😱 hope it works out for you Leanne x😱

Try Chase Tiling Academy mate - I used to be a Teacher and re trained here. Haven't looked back since mate. They teach you the lot....

Most employers are now starting to look for recognised qualifications (thats if you are thinking of going PAYE). This is for 2 reasons. 1. Obviously they would prefer a qualified person other than somebody that has apparently got 'experience'. Especially now that it's common knowledge that these tiler factories are churning them out by the million with no quals and poor training. 2. It is soon a requirement to have a CSCS card whilst on a building site. And without actually being on a course that gives you a recognised qual, or you have the qual, you will not get a card. Therefore no work on site. Most employers are actually running this rule right now in preparation for 2010 when its concrete law.

Chase Tiling Academy are almost accredited to run the ICA, which is the foundation you need to gain your NVQ2 in tile fixing. They are more than likely going to be able to offer this too. Give them a call to find out.

The only other option is to go domestic where you don't need quals and CSCS cards.

Thanks for your advice and kind wishes. I have booked onto the North East Tiling course in March and will just take it from there, one step at a time. I'm looking forward to it already.
