cracking
In petrochemistry, petroleum geology and organic chemistry, cracking is the process whereby complex organic molecules such as kerogens or long-chain hydrocarbons are broken down into simpler molecules such as light hydrocarbons, by the breaking of carbon-carbon bonds in the precursors. The rate of cracking and the end products are strongly dependent on the temperature and presence of catalysts. Cracking is the breakdown of a large alkane into smaller, more useful alkenes. Simply put, hydrocarbon cracking is the process of breaking a long chain of hydrocarbons into short ones. This process requires high temperatures.More loosely, outside the field of petroleum chemistry, the term "cracking" is used to describe any type of splitting of molecules under the influence of heat, catalysts and solvents, such as in processes of destructive distillation or pyrolysis.
Fluid catalytic cracking produces a high yield of petrol and LPG, while hydrocracking is a major source of jet fuel, diesel fuel, naphtha, and again yields LPG.
I have used dark grey grout with crackle metro tiles, the idea being that the grout stains the cracks before applying sealant and gives it an aged look. However, the tiles have stained very irregularly: some tiles just atined in patches, some have not taken stain at all. Any ideas what i can do...

Hi all. I've recently tiles a kitchen splashback with 300 X 100 X 8mm johnsons ceramic tiles onto a solid wall. 3 months later the customer calls me to say 2 tiles are cracked. Looking at the job I find 4 further cracked tiles but it's the glaze that's cracked. The cracks run in different...

Hi, can anyone please offer a reason why the uptiles at the front of 2 ensuite walk in showers (below the shower screen) have cracked along the top corner edge? It's not just the grout that is cracked but the actual tiles themselves have cracked as well. The same thing has happened in 2 of the...

The attached image shows a hair line crack on some cement floor tiles about 4 ft in length that starts at the wall and runs to the middle of the room. The tiles were laid by a professional about 14 months ago in my upstair bathroom - regular 1960 's timber frame house. There was also some...

Our house was built in 1966 and the kitchen was extended in 1973, the new floor was laid with Platt quarry tiles. Until last month we had no problems. Then I noticed a 10ft long hairline crack along the line of the join between the old and new solid floors. Two surveyors have said...

Hi
I’ve just removed a stone floor for a client. I didn’t tile it originally.
The stone tiles had 3 sizeable cracks in it and the floor has a wet ufh system. We couldn’t work out why the tiles had cracked apart from guessing that it was due to cracks in the screed below and not using a...

Hi guys, A customer has just asked if I Could regrout areas of a shower enclosure as it's suspected the water is running behind the grout and through the living room ceiling. There's quite a lot of cracking although tiles are OK. It appears that it's been laid on just plaster board and it's all...
