    Tiling onto plywood

What sort of annual maintenance would be required? Raking out and re-grouting or something else? Wiping over with diluted bleach every few months doesn't seem to prevent discolouration.

    Tiling onto plywood

Hmm. I'm no expert but it looks like those tiles have been dot-and-dabbed and/or have been very poorly applied in the first place and/or the adhesive itself has failed, ie nothing to do with whether the substrate was plywood or not. Is this really the way walls should be tiled? I applied my...

    Tiling onto plywood

Interesting comments about epoxy vs powder grout, though I'm not really understanding why a breathable grout helps a shower to dry out after use. I'd have thought a breathable grout would retain moisture and therefore take longer to dry completely, hence promoting mould growth. After all, the...

    Tiling onto plywood

Glad to hear that your plywood shower has been good for 25+ years. Btw, I'm not trying to advocate plywood over other alternatives and doubt I would use it again for a shower cubicle. My point is that it CAN be used effectively with appropriate design (as you have noted), even though it may...

    Tiling onto plywood

Out of interest, what would be considered a 'lifetime'? 25 years? 50 years? Also, if it's a 'common practice' and a 'huge error' then it suggest the building industry has a serious quality problem. As for mould-free, I'd suggest that's more to do with adequate ventilation - something the...

    Tiling onto plywood

Whoosh - another 10 years gone by! Someone might be interested in another update so here are a couple of photos I've just taken of the shower cubicle in question. 12 years of almost daily use since it was finished there have been no leaks, no cracks, no tiles have dropped off, in fact no...

Tiling on to plywood - grouting follow-up

Thanks for the tip - I'd not heard of HG Mould Remover. I'll give it a try and report back!

Tiling on to plywood - grouting follow-up

I know this is an area of some controversy so I thought there might be some interest in following up a DIY project I discussed back in 2012 here: Tiling onto plywood - https://www.tilersforums.com/threads/tiling-onto-plywood.56767/ Well, seven years on with the shower in almost daily use there...

    Tiling onto plywood

I thought people might be interested in an update. The shower I described earlier has now been in daily use for almost two years and seems to be fine. No leaks, no signs of cracking and even the tiles on the ceiling are still stuck solid. Time will tell of course, so fingers crossed for...

    Shower Cubicle Grouting/Sealing Question

    OK, will do. Many thanks.

    Shower Cubicle Grouting/Sealing Question

When grouting a shower cubicle, I understand that the corner wall joints and shower tray joints should be sealed with Silicon. Should these joints be grouted first and then sealed with Silicon, or should they be left grout-free and the whole joint be made with Silicon?

    Tiling onto plywood

I spoke to a builder friend yesterday and asked him about epoxy grout. He suggested it would be beyond my DIY skills to manage a neat job. So I reckon I'll be using bal microban grout. Meanwhile, just to show I don't always listen to reason, I decided to tile the shower ceiling anyway...

    Tiling onto plywood

Ah, that's disappointing. I don't fancy tiling a ceiling area with mosaic tiles - the two mosaic strips I used on the walls were fiddly enough! I thought modern tile adhesives were OK for ceilings and the tiles are not particularly heavy. Hmm, perhaps a should just paint the cubicle ceiling...

    Tiling onto plywood

Thanks for that. I'm thinking more about mould and general dirt-resistance than waterproofing. My thinking is that 'normal' grouts will absorb some water (and dirt?) and therefore promote mould growth. I understand modern grouts contain mould inhibitors but does this last forever or just put...

    Tiling onto plywood

The same white tiles as the walls. Is this likely to be a problem?
