Identifying Marble Type

Tilers Forums Official Sponsors

Hi,

We recently purchased a vanity unit which has a marble top on it. Just had a few queries if people could kindly answer. Firstly, the marble is very crystal like. When we looked at kitchen worktops a while back I never saw any marble that had crystals in it - only granite? Also, the veining is nice but strange as per the pics. Some veins have black specs in them. Some veins are grey whilst others are brown? Some veins are even half brown half grey? I guess this is just down to natural variation since it's a natural stone? All the marble I have seen previous was pretty consist for that piece in terms of vein colours. Anyone able to identify the type of marble?

Thanks

Not sure on the exact type of marble, maybe an Italian calcatta, but I can tell you that larger crystals in marble or granite are due to the rock cooling very slowly allowing the calcite crystals to grow. I'm no expert on marble although I do know from experience of the marble tops and tiles we've used that those with more visible crystals tend to be higher priced with the flat white crystal free marble being at the lower priced end. This probably doesn't at all answer your query but it's just my own experience with marble.
