Thanks for your comments, but I have now overboarded and tiled as per previous replys. Gave a nice smooth surface and removed the hassle of scrapping off the old paint.

Yeah, was undecided whether to tile horizontal or vertical, but as the lines wouldn't match either way decide to go the length of the slope. I suppose it's personal preference, but I'm happy with the finish.

because the tiles laid on the slope the other way measure 100mm , short side, and the main wall tiles cut at the angle would measure about 141 mm if the slope angle is 45 degrees
