The old timers here told me that they used to add backing soda to the fat mud to make it kick off faster ("fat mud" here is "render"). I've never tried it.

You boys ever pee'd in your plaster? when I was a lad they use to do it all the time to slow it down, haven't 'seen' anybody do it for years though, i'm not sure it ever worked

When I was about 17 I knew a brickie that used to pee on his hands because he reckoned it kept his hands warm? I never did let him make me a brew nor did I shake his hand.
