Tiling onto polystyrene

Hi. I have a Kaldewei bath, with a polystyrene 'cocoon' surrounding it underneath.

Can I tile straight onto the polystyrene, or do I need to build a bath surround out of wood etc?

Grateful for a steer from someone who knows their onions!

You wont be able tile it as it is, plus if you ever needed to replace the tiles you'd damage the surround.

So... use tile backerboards or make a frame out of timber and use plywood or similar and then tank it and tile it.
