I have an exterior terrace approx. 60 sq.m. it is an integral part of the house and forms part of the roof of the garage so it is a substantial lump of concrete. I believe there is a system whereby a bitumen style roll on covering is applied to the base, then plastic cones which are adjustable in height are and approx. 10cm high are place over the whole surface. tiles, or paving stones up to 50cm square are laid on the cones and levelled. No grouting is used so the water runs between the tiles to the lower level and then to the drain(s). The upper surface is therefore totally level, water does not pool and discolouring is avoided thereby. This system is used widely on the Continent and in places it is obligatory. Laying the tiles straight on to a piece of polythene on top of a screed is not encouraged. All comments appreciated.
