my tiling partner has just rang me, he,s had a call from a construction company we did some subbie work for last year they want us to tender for quite a large project, they are sending us the package out, this is something ive all ways had my reservations about doing, never tended for a job like this before any advice please . thanks in advance

Short answer always price in for all eventualities, make sure if you supplying materials to add your mark up on such ,and make sure you price for added extras as when the jobs coming to an end they will be reluctant to pay such.

And most important for any added extras you have a c.v.i(confirmation of verbal instruction)signed or whatever said company use(daywork sheet etc.)

And if they tell you to do something your not happy doing ,then ask them to sign a waiver(usually makes them get things right).

Hope that helps:thumbsup:

you need to be careful when you get these tenders some come from the contractors estimating office ,the estimator gets you to do all the work putting a tender together they then price for the job but rarely come back to you as the quantity surveyor takes over when the contract has been awarded, if the tender is fron the contractors quantity surveyor then its worth putting the hours in pricing it up, most of the tender package is waffle ,look for the m40 pages which cover the wall and floor tiling specification ,put your price together then be clear about what the contractors payment terms and conditons are, if you get the job you will get a chance to sit down with the Q.S at a prelimenary contract meeting where they will ask for a discount at this point you have got room to negotiate as the minutes from the meeting are normally typed up and you both sign the official order for the work ,when asked for a discount it is advisable to agree to 2.5% if its monthly valuation and payment after 30 days, offer more discount for better terms and conditions 5% will normally gain you fortnightly valuations and payments depending on how good a negotiator you are ,
good luck with it

thanks alot gary for that valuable information.much appreciated :thumbsup:

i suppose we will need a method statement & health & safety policy as well

Yes, but don't worry about this just yet - if your pricing is OK and the contract is big enough, then you'll be invited to a Pre Contract Award meeting. This is where the negotiating takes place and you'll be asked for all your H&S documents. You won't lose the job at this stage if you haven't got them ready, just tell them you'll have them sent before you start on site - the earlier the better after the meeting, but it shouldn't be a deal breaker.
DON'T be bullied mate, but stay friendly and relaxed if you get to the meeting - if you've got that far, your price is favorable and in this climate that's what they'll want:thumbsup:

Just put their minds at rest that you can do the job to a high standard and you'll be OK:thumbsup:

I know your first big job will feel great, but it's a false economy if at the end you're skint....

If you can get an H&S policy along with relevant COSHH literature for materials being used, before the Pre Contract, then you'll really impress.
