New member seeking advice! - Tile Advice

Good morning,

I've used this site a number of times for tiling info and have always found it really useful, but this time I wanted to post a question before I start a tiling job.
I am about to start work on our en-suite shower. I need to remove the old tiles and (no idea what is under there i'm assuming plasterboard going by how the rest of the house as been done) but i will probably need to re-board the area. Was planning on using Wedi board as its the shower can get pretty wet but I had a couple of questions about the process of re-boarding.

1) What is the safest way of removing old board without damaging the stud behind it. Time isn't an issue luckily so happy for any suggestions.
2) Once I've put up the boards (Wedi as I mentioned) and taped the joints (self adhesive reinforcement tape) do I need to run a thin layer of adhesive over the tape? If so, the same as I will be using for the tiling job?

Any other general advice regards boarding a shower would be great.

I've done some pro tiling courses and feel like i've got a good grasp on the tiling and the knowledge that is needed but i'm still a beginner when it comes to prepping using matts and boarding. Hoping that by working on my own house will give me more confidence.

Hi steve, if the tiles can be separated from the plasterboard it makes everything easier, the weight of plasterboard and tile can be quite heavy. First thing I would do would be to use a hammer and chisel and find where the shower pipes are going and carefully track them until they go into the floor or into the ceiling to avoid nicking them later on. If the tiles cannot be separated its easier to cut the plasterboard into manageable pieces to remove, use something with a depth gauge if you can to avoid cutting into the studs. As far as the wedi goes they do wedi sealant for the joints as well as waterproof tape for the seams and I think they advise sticking this with a flexible adhesive. They do washers and screws to fix to the studs and they advise to cover with wedi sealent to make them waterproof.

All as above but i would also think about tanking the area.
Get a decent tanking kit for about £40/50 and it has all you need.
primer, waterproof tape and tanking soloution and just follow the
instructions its realy not that hard and gives you peace of mind.

How has the shower boards got on?
Did the removal damage the stud in any way shape or form?
How did you finish the job?
