Yep thats the way to do it. If doing horizontal border I usually cut some oddsy tile the width of the border plus what ever joint then once surrounding tiling is set remove and do as Macten does , works a treat and you can get the mosaic exactly to correct depth , be that flush or slighlty proud depending on your taste.
Me I like to leave it ever so slightly proud, just.

Isn't leaving 2mm for adhesive a bit tight? Or do people use a 3mm Notchy for mosaics?
