Batten block wall for tiling

Tilers Forums Official Sponsors

After removing my old bathroom tiles, the plasterboard behind was in a state. I have removed the plasterboard and removed the old dot and dab on the block wall. The block wall is quite uneven.

Is it ok to batten the wall, attach tile backer to the studs and tile?

If so, what size battens do I use?

Cheers

You could batten the wall but you can dot and dab the tile backer to the block work with tile adhesive.

How old is the house. If its outside walls with no insulation I'd batten walls with 2 x 1 or larger if you can afford to lose a bit of room size and put a rigid style insulation between then overboard with duplex (foil backed) plasterboard...this will give some form of insulation and a vapour barrier. The plasterboard can be tanked in any wet areas prior to tiling...it will only need plastered in untiled areas. Prime the rest to be tiled and tile away.....the plasterboard will take 32kg per sq mtr so most normal tiles are ok....allow around 4kg for adhesive per sq mtr. Put extra timber in walls for items such as towel rails, wall hung units, shower screen etc.
