My 1st Job Wall Around Shower Tray Not Square

Run the boards to the floor behind the tray. Then seal the tray to the boards with a good quality sanitary Silicon sealant (Dow Corning, Mapei or BAL) tile then seal again. If you try to make up the difference with backer boards use machanical fixings as well as adhesive 👍

    Self teaching

Sorry to hear about you loosing your job, it is possible to self teach yourself any new skill. And there is so much instructional information and videos out there. Just depends on how well you can pick up practical skills. Would say find someone to work with/labour for to learn the basics...

What are the current walls at the moment? Block or stud? Cheers

    Tiling on Ply Floor

Hi Liam, not much point in putting plywood on top of plywood, I would go for a 6mm cement board either Hardie backer or no more ply, bedded on adhesive and screwed to the existing plywood then ready to tile 👍

Urgent plywood /backer-board advice needed !!!

No reason why you couldn't put the foam backer boards directly onto the studs. But the only issue might be getting a good fixing on shower screens, shower riser's or any accessories... Ect 👍

Poor preparation for shower wall tiling?

I'd say the builder is mainly to blame but I think the tiler should also take some responsibility. If I had to tile that wall I'd either have a word with the builder first or put in some extra screws and fibreglass tape the joints.

Urgent plywood /backer-board advice needed !!!

I think the foam boards over the plywood may be your best bet, fix with adhesive and screw using washers. The plywood will give structural strength 👍

    Heated floor dilemma

It never hurts to apply some dilute primer to the boards. Would allow to completely dry before fitting the underfloor heat mat 👍

    Heated floor dilemma

Using screws with washers along with taping the joints would be belt and braces. Just go around with duct tape and cover any gaps or fill with tile adhesive, I usually put a piece of batten across the threshold and duct tape the inside face 👍

    Bad tiling?

No not fussy at all, didn't realise that section of wall was such a short run, just a shame that socket couldn't have been moved up by 1cm 👍
  11. J K Tiling Cornwall

    Bad tiling?

I would always put the smaller cut with the bigger cut so the tiles wrap around the internal corner. Always looks better. Only this late in the day would mean ripping one lot off. If anything is going in the corner then might be best to leave, but it's your call.

    Bad tiling?

I think the overall standard is okay but I think it was more bad luck on the height of the sockets. They seem a little too high not sure if there is a standard height to set them at? Maybe an electrician would know? All the best

    Thistle bond

Thistle bond it and blue grit are both PVA based and shouldn't be used. Mapei do one just for tiling called prim grip. But even though I wouldn't recommend tiling over the tiles I'd say a slurry coat would be your best bet, mix SBR and water 50/50 and mix with cement based adhesive, keep it...

Preference for screws to fix 9mm ply to 22mm chipboard?

I'd use the 4x25 screws. Just out of interest what's the final floor finish? Cheers

Does a cement and sand covered wall need tanking?

Hi, no need to tank it to the floor just below the bath line would be sufficient. A decent Silicon sealant is fine, Mapei, Dow Corning or BAL easier to work with and clean off than the hybrid sealants. 👍

    Bathroom mosaic wall tiles

Fitted either that tile or a very similar one back in 2007 from B&Q think it was about a foot square. Could be different thought it's been a while
  17. J K Tiling Cornwall

Does a cement and sand covered wall need tanking?

Hi, tanking the area is not essential but would be belt and braces. Most tanking kits come with a primer either acrylic or resin based is fine. Then tile directly to the tanking solution no need to prime again. Use a cement based adhesive, the no nonsense one is quite sandy and really quick...

    Tiling on chipboard 22mm?

Is the floor suspended or floating? Will need overboarding with tile backer board. Might be able to get away with an anti-fracture mating if really solid with no deflection. 👍

    Wall prep question

Sorry for late reply...I use a dilute SBR primer and always a cement-based adhesive. Use standard set to give yourself more time. Glad to help

    Wall prep question

No problems fitting the tile boards over the plywood (no different to preparing a floor) 12mm would be fine, prime the plywood first and bed the boards on with a thin bed of adhesive. Use the washer fixings with the screws, I do all at the same time and fibreglass tape the joints as I go 👍
