Did we get taken for a ride?

The guys you had seem pretty efficient and if the job is good and you are happy then can't see no issues. Price wise they did okay but maybe it just all went well for them. You never know what to expect when ripping out a bathroom. Had the tiling been really rough and shoddy and just smashed out...

    External tiling

Hi, if the existing quarry tiles are solid I would prime with dilute SBR, leave to dry then give a slurry coat with a S1 adhesive mixed with SBR and water 50:50. Allow to go off then should be fine to tile with a exterior S1 cement based adhesive. Try to do on a cool day and aim for a complete...

Quality of tile cutting when installing a metal edging strip

Jeeeez.. This is the second post I have seen with tiles looking like they have been chewed up and spat out! Are people trying to use handsaws now to cut tiles? I know some tiles can be more prone to chipping but still no real excuse for that. Are they glazed porcelain?

Plywood tiling not setting in places

Guessing it was a standard set adhesive? If the floor was solid and the plywood primed and really well screwed down. A cement based adhesive should stick to it pretty good. I usually wipe the back of ceramic tiles with a damp sponge just before I back butter and bed them. Maybe the adhesive...

    Removing timber floorboards for tiling

Hi, I would overboard the floor with a moisture resistant flooring grade chipboard (tounge and groove). Glue the joins. Then overboard with a cement based backer board (no more ply/Hardie) bedded on adhesive and screwed down. Fibreglass tape the joins for good measure, then tile. Will be...

Plywood tiling not setting in places

Although not recommended to tile onto plywood, it sounds like a combination of the plywood and ceramic tiles drawing out moisture from the adhesive too quick. Was the plywood primed first? And what type of adhesive was used?

    Advice needed, floor sinking.

Thanks for that info. They want to salvage the floor as it is original. Depending on what I discover underneath. Hopefully nothing too major, fingers crossed. But will post the outcome. 👍

    Advice needed, floor sinking.

Thanks Dave. Once I get the time to go back I'm going to try and get under the floor, hopefully might be a case of propping up anything that has dropped and repairing any loose tiles. Will post the outcome on here.

    Advice needed, floor sinking.

I have a customer who has an original tiled Victorian hallway. In geometric quarry tiles. There is a section that has recently dropped and flexes when walked on. The two rooms that run next to the hallway have suspended timber floors. The section that has sunk sounds and feels like it could be...

Removing tiles from plasterboard (with a twist)

When I have removed tiles on these type of walls in the past and caused damage. I've cut out the damaged sections and slotted in timber. B&Q used to do a planed square type that almost fitted perfectly. Was only 40 something mm but I had to glue it in place. The honey comb cardboard can...

    Tile repair in wet room

Hi the only way would be to adjust the waste pipe, may need a different fitting. You need the connection to be above the tile so you can be sure it's watertight. 👍

    First time tiling sanity check.

All sounds good. Can't see anything wrong with that plan 👍

    800x800 large format tiles

I'd use a 10mm half round notched trowel. Back butter the tiles and look to use a levelling clip system. Score and snap any straight cuts. I use a really thin (similar to rubi tvh turbo viper) diamond blade in a grinder for any 'L' shape cuts.. etc but still score and cut inside the scoreline to...

    Glazed polished porcelain need sealing?

That sounds good if nothing has stained after that test. Some porcelain can come pre sealed but would usually advertise the fact on the box. I used to think porcelain sealers were like snake oil, after all how can something stain if non porous? But have only seen it a few times and with a...

Decoupling mat over self-levelling plywood floor

Although you can self-level over plywood I'd never personally self-level over a substrate I wouldn't tile directly onto. If height is not too much of an issue I would fit 6mm cement backer board to the floor area (bedded on adhesive and screwed down). Then build up the low point with self...

Please help! Subway tiles are a shambles

Depends on the type of adhesive used but as there is such a gap between the window sill, should prise off using a decent scraper blade.

    Glazed polished porcelain need sealing?

Although porcelain is virtually non porous, polished porcelain can still stain. When marking a glazed tile for cutting the marker pen wipes clean off but with some polished porcelain a faint mark still remains almost in the tile, impossible to remove. So for peace of mind I would seal the...

    Waterproofing Bathroom Advice

Hi I'd say go for a tanking solution that can be painted on. Will be much easier to work with. I tend to use Mapei Aqua defense. If the bath is fitted well a decent bead of hybrid sealant should be sufficient. No need to go too overboard if the walls are block. 👍

Techniques for applying sealant to 3 lines of a corner joint

I would always seal around the bottom first then go up maybe 30cms max on the vertical seal. Next I'd give the Silicon a light spray with soapy water, being careful to only spray the bottom of the vertical seal. Finish the seal with a tool around the bottom then finish the vertical seal, spray...

Is this bathroom tiling good enough?

Have to say it's not the best finish to be honest. But hexagonal tiles can be hard to work with. Once one is slightly out is has a domino effect and starts to throw everything out. If the walls are out and the tiles are small then grout joints can open and pinch, where the tiles follow the form...
