Hi,

Just getting to the stage before tiling in one of my bathrooms. I'm fitting tile backer boards to a full wall and half of the adjoining wall to where a 1200x800 shower will go. The walas are concrete block and have had Thistle bondit applied (the green sandy gluey paint), then a bonding coat (5-8 mm to take out some warps), and another Thistle bondit coat. Now is the bit I'm not sure about. I was going to apply a skim and then use SBR on the skim before using powder mix fast setting adhesive to fix the tile backer boards, then tile it. I'll end up with about 7 layers!.

Anyone know if I can just miss out the next plaster skim and put the tile backer boards straight on to the thistle bondit? then tile the boards?

Mal

Hi Mal... only if you stabilise the surface with say SBR and then mechanically fix the boards into adhesive bed... then fixings must go through the bonding into the blocks.. then no risk of delamination..

You cannot tile to the bonding or rely on the adhesive to hold without mechanical fixings through the boards..

Hi Mal,

I know its a bit late on this occasion but just curious as to why you used the bond-it and plaster?
If it was just to take up the slight warp you could have taken that up with the bed of adhesive that you stick the backer boards on with.

The two walls that have bonding plaster used to have dot and dab applied plasterboard which was also tiled. The tiles ripped part of teh board off during removal - all a bit of a mess, and hacking off the dot and dab advesive took chunks out of the concrete blocks in places, so I have taken off what I could without damaging the wall too much, and had to bring it back out in places. Hence, bondit on the blocks, bonding plaster, then bondit again. Its just a question of whether I should skim it (2-3 mm) again before fixing the backer boards or just putting the boards and adhesive straight onto the bondit finish.
