Hello everyone. I've just joined this forum because I need some info regarding substrates etc. I'm mainly just a DIY guy, but have worked casually, in a number of trades. I'm not usually a "tweeter", so I'll have to see how things go!

I'm currently refurbishing my bathroom, and have come up against a problem or two.

1, Hacking off the old tiles from a studding wall has caused some damage to the plaster board. I've decided to replace some of it and I'm wondering if I can tile straight onto the new boards or do I have to skim first?

2, On another (plastered block) wall I noticed that in places the tiles came off a bit too easily because the underlying paint lifted off with the old adhesive. This makes me wonder if it's a good idea to tile painted walls. I know it's been done lots of times and it may be just the inferior paint that the original builders used. Is it OK to tile over silk vinyl paint?

Hello Bill and welcome..

If you are fully tiling then it is great to tile straight to plaster board .. and yes, not the best of ideas to tile to paint if of the emulsion type..

Welcome along to TF Bill. Plasterboard is better to tile to than skim, so save a few quid and don't skim. Best practice is to remove the paint, a steamer and scraper is my preferred method, a sander will work also. You might want to give some consideration to tanking any wet areas, is there a shower in the room? It's a relatively cheap process and will protect your substrate in the event of any water ingress.
