went to look at job today and customer has bought 12mm travertine tiles .Tiles are going about 1.2 m up wall but the wall is skim over plasterboard !!!! I understand this is isnt suitable for the weight of the tile and need to know next option to tackle this prob.Should i screw hardibacker to the wall first ? and how can i deal with the extra backing thickness ? as the tiles are only 1.2 m high the thickness on the top tile will be visible ..ta

You could just cut out the Plaster board up to the 1.2 m hight and replace with a backer board such as Hardie.....

I agree, cracking advice Stewart

Iv dont the same with slate a few times. I did a job a little while ago where I tiles the floor in slate and then cut the plasterboard away along the bottom of the room so that the slate up stand finished flush with the painted wall. Looked really smart.
