Financial Reward/backhanders

Does it happen and is it ok to give financial rewards to people who promote/pass on business to you - say counter staff at tile shops, other tradesmen. If so how much do do give? a percentage of total cost or standard payment?

Staff in shops you can just buy a nice butty for on a certain day of the week and then beers at xmas and support their promotions with your customers etc. I wouldn't give a % of anything to anybody. I'd just help with any win-win situations.... tile shops need your customers business just like you needing their customers business.
