Great idea I tend to use aluminium 4 meter straight edges for floors and drop lines every 2 courses.

It is ok to use spacers if your material is rectified, if it is not then grid line and strait edges.

On small joint you can use toothpicks,plastic shims (the small ones) and a strait edge, also to maintain square I like to install in a stair step pattern.
