I need advice on wet room floor?

hi folks customer has a wet room already.But floor has a thick vinyl type covering,he now wants it tiled.I started to peel off vinyl(its gonna take a while) all the sub floor is plywood including the fall into the drain,i was expecting it to be a plastic tray.was going to look at tanking the area immediately around the drain (ie shower area) .i have never used a tanking system yet but need to learn sometime.my main concern is the wooden subfloor will water penetrate through the grout to it?should i tank the whole floor? or is it a bad idea to tile in this situation?

What about shower a tray that fits on the joists but butts against the ply.

it may come to that,the falls on wooden floor look ok thou and if there is no problem tiling on to it i think it would be easier option

Your grout choice will depend on the type of shower, if it has a lot of water coming through it will need to be highly polymer modified but if you tank on top of the plywood (if it is plywood) it doesn't matter if the water goes through the grout. You'll need a drain that ties in with your tanking system.

How are there any falls with the ply wood into the drain when it's laid onto the floor joists

there are 4 triangle shaped pieces of ply running down into drain just like a tray would have

You won't need training on tanking but you can get DVD's etc or footage of how to on some manufacturers web sites. Essentially if you can paint you can use most tanking kits.

18mm i think that it is on floorboards for most of the room not sure about drain area

Worth checking, I must admit I would go for a tray, Tuff2 is a solid one then tank the whole floor.

There's no deflection on the floor by the way

Fill a glass or cup of water to the brim then place on the floor, then jump up and down and see how much water you lose.

This will give an indication how much bounce you have

Im going to have to agree with whitebeam, if you can replace the ply with a tray It would be a good idea. Ply isnt the best substrate to tile onto at the best of times and I wouldnt want anything that can rot in a wet area
