Re: Poll: What adhesive brand do you trust most?

They also produce ardex mate...........

Pursedog, if your new to it all go for the top brand like Bal and you cant go wrong you can relax that you know your using something that will work.....Once your confidence has grown and a bit of experience comes your way then start experimenting with some others and eventually you will just stick with one or two.

Personally i only really use Bal White star or Blue star (ie White star in showers and bathrooms and blue star for kitchen splashbacks etc....

for floors i use Bal single part flexible if on plywood or other floors that may have slight movement..

Bal Rapidset Maxibag for concrete floors or other solid surfaces like screeds and stuff

Grouting i use Bal or Ardex.

If you just stick to this mate i am pretty certain you wont get any problems.

I also know that Mapei and Granfix are supposed to be great so if in your area it's easier to get hold of these brands then you can't go wrong with these, i ain't used them but many of the more experienced tilers on here have and they swear by it so thats good enough for me.

Re: Poll: What adhesive brand do you trust most?

Looking at the poll, I see that Palace scores high, I am on with a bathroom for a frien, he has supplied ther adhesive, a 'no name' type :( but when I was reading the label it has " Palace product " on it, when asked where he got it he replied Aldi ??????

Anyone else know of any other major brands trading under different names ?

P.S. This adhesive was only £10 a tub.

Re: Poll: What adhesive brand do you trust most?

Palace is also available under the Toppfix banner, rapid, rapid flexible, screed comp, waterproof and standard tub gear, two part flexible etc only available to the trade very good and very cheap

Thanks for the info mate, tried to find your place in Stockton the other day, didn't have time to look to hard, I'll find it next time and have a look see.

Thanks again.

Re: What adhesive brand do you trust most?

Used Bal for ages until out of convienience ran into Mapei, found it much easier to work with for some reason, covers with alot less effort (does what I want it to do, control it easier, it wants to look pretty n uniform before the tile goes on). I find the grouts take a bit more cleaning up but hey, maybe I should work a bit less messy, but a brill colour selection.
More expensive for me but worth the extra few pennies to make my life easier on a monday morning.

Gaz @ topps,
looking back at tjsmilers reply (Futher down the page) of the list of what he uses (very helpful for newbies may I add) My local Topps tiles says they only stock the bal blue star & grip, but don't stock white star (although they will order it) I get the impression that not all topps tile stores stock the same items. Is this correct? why is this? It's just that tjsmiler uses white star for showers & blue star for kitchens. Could blue star not be used for both?

Tony,Blue star and Bal Grip are fine for showers, but if it is a power shower White star is recommended. All Topps stores can get any product in the Topps range, but certain stores are not large enough to carry stock of everything,Preston is large and we do stock White star. IMO white star is the best tub adhesive on the planet.

Re: What adhesive brand do you trust most?

Just to clear up the confusion ...Ardex bought BAL 3 years ago. Bal own the brandname Dunlop. Staff from Bal left and formed Norcros Adhesives which is now a seperate adhesive company. Howtex was bought by Webber and Broutin and then swallowed up by St Gobain group which includes CTD.
Mapei are the largest in the world and still a privately owned family company

Had heard that Ultra produce one of the other well known brands. Makes you wonder how many primary producers supply the market ?

Gave up on BAL after twenty five years. Too big a range of products, leading to overlapping products and indecision as to which product to use.
No problem with Ultra. Very small range. One primer does all. Change the setting time of their cement based adhesives to suit the season!

I swear that Norcros 'went back' to using the Bal name a year or two ago ????
