We’ve recently decided we’d like to tile our narrow chimney breast in advance of fitting a wood burner. The recess itself will be lined with some leftover limestone paving slabs I have, but we’d like to tile the rest of the breast in a split face natural stone mosaic if possible.
This is definitely a job for the pros, and I know it’s more complex than fitting standard ceramic wall tiles, so will cost more. I don’t want to waste anybody’s time by asking them to come out and quote if we’re definitely not going to be able to afford it, so I thought I’d see if anybody on here is able to give me a ballpark idea of what it’d cost (we’re in the South East). I know this is a hated question, and difficult to answer without seeing the job, but do the details below give you enough of an idea to give a rough estimate?
Area:
3.18m2 in total. Chimney breast is 1000mm wide and 2200mm high, (minus the recess 560mm wide and 1000mm high). Returns are 350mm wide each. The recess won’t need tiling and the limestone slabs in there will provide a straight edge to tile up to, hiding the tile ends.
External corners – we’d like the external corners either mitred or fitted as straight edges (which I understand is an option with natural stone tiles, and may be cheaper and easier to do?).
Substrate – I can either strip the whole thing back to bare brick, mech fix 12mm hardiebacker, or have it rendered depending on tiler preference.
Tiles – probably a 600mm x 150mm quartzite split face mosaic – like this Silver Grey Split Face Mosaic Tiles - Large - https://www.stonetilecompany.co.uk/silver-grey-split-face-mosaic-tiles-large
Any advice or opinions from the pros would be gratefully received.
