Tiling Rates Per Square Meter / Per Day – How much do tilers charge?

how-much-do-tilers-charge-per-day-square-meter.jpg

I know this is a hard one to answer. But just as an approximate guide for those searching for how much a tiler costs, and landing on websites such as my builder who seem to be selling tilers for pennies, how much you been charging either day rate or per meter generally?
Perhaps if you could split your work between your fancy stuff, and your bread-winning stuff over the past year or so, then do that so we can see the difference.
And then perhaps price per floors and per walls? If different at all.
Just wanted to get the facts straight for those searching, as £150 per day or £20 per meter isn’t what I’d expect to pay anymore. It’s not the 90’s lol

How Much Do Tilers Charge?
Is it per square meter or per job or per day rate?
It appears to be a bit of a post code lottery perhaps. So we thought we'd get a bit of a thread going to see what others charge and why.

Jobs with natural stone products simply require more time to lay and finish, all the cuts have to be done on wet cutter , they also need cleaning and sealing . In general thicker material involves more fitting time due to slower cutting process.
Thanks for the reply Andreas. And do per m2 prices include adhesive and grout etc or is that on top? One other thing, prep work, removing old tiles, laying self levelling compound etc if on a floor, I notice people tend to charge day rate for this. Let's just say its one day in prep work for example, am I right in thinking it would be charge at let's just say 150 for that day, then charge the rest of the job at the m2 rate as normal? For instance, 150 prep, 10m2 at 30 per m2, 300 + 150 so 450 all in?

...and then you open a can of worms you never saw coming...expect the unexpected, any prep has to be on dayrate, tbh as tilings my hobby  I like my dayrate most of the time but damm if you prep properly the moneys there to be earned on M rates....

Ok well for me this has been my first year in tiling self employed , so their has been many times where i have shot myself in the foot and not charged enough (my fault still learning the pro and cons) But as a rule now its around £30/40 a square meter if its natural stone then its £50 a square meter and day rate which is rare for me i charge around the £160. But to be honest a lot of jobs i tend to price up now i give them a overal figure as their can be many other mitigating circumstances to completing a job and actually making some money out of it. .......Which im still trying to do

Cheers Andy. Seeing all the different views on it makes it sound slightly complicated to me. Although I'm sure once you know what your doing it really isn't. This is all new to me. Coming from a mechanics background so totally different to what I'm used to.

All materials on top
Regarding Your cost breakdown , that's correct, as long as installing 5m2 won't take You two days, make sure You consider all cuts, boxing's etc, like I've mentioned before if there is a lot of fancy cuts, boxing's etc or the tile is small in size You may find Yourself taking pennies for the job.
I'm always trying to give one fixed price for the job/each room (if multiple involved )so calculate how long it will take to go through every step, big floors ,usuall bathrooms on ppm2, prep and tricky areas on day rate.
Always proper on site checks before providing quote

Hello there Dan ,

It’s a very competitive market out there now as there are just so many tilers ( or so called tilers ) advertising the professional tilers services for at very cheap rates.

I have been tiling for 21 years now and I can’t earn what I used to 10 years ago as it doesn’t seem to be such a specialist trade anymore as so many people are doing it.

I find I quote for many jobs on a constant basis but always being undercut by less experienced fixers and many times been contacted redo the work as they say ( you only get what you pay for ).....so what I’m saying is i find it hard nowadays to earn the money I want as a professional tile fixer.

So regarding pricing I have had to bring my rates down to win the work.

I quote easy local jobs on a meter price to work out at £150 a day minimum profit and more specialist jobs up to a maximum of £200 per day Walls and floors......prices per metre all vary as one week I can be working with small sheet mosaic or large format plank porcelain and the next week natural stone flooring or large format porcelthin .....most clients end up bringing those daytates down so I get the job but if I’m honest after my last tax year profits I was around the £145 a day mark before tax if that helps.

Thanks for the info. As I say this is all new to me and I'm hoping to a UK Pro tiling course soon. Apparently they tell you how to price jobs too so hopefully all this sort of stuff would be included. It's a bit daunting spending all the money the course is going to cost by time I've paid for travel and accommodation etc. I'm 350 mile away! Come from a mechanics background so this is completely not what I'm used to! Very keen to do it though!

To be honest £150 a day rate is fairly normal here for me as there are about a zillion folk undercutting everyone. £20 a meter plus materials is the lowest i do for regular work but there is no chance of achieving some of the rates mentioned in here unless i want to sit at home most of the day and not even have Jeremy Kyle to keep me entertained while i wait for someone to say yes to it. I quoted £200 with all materials for 3m a herringbone splashback and they couldn't get me out the door quick enough and that was me going cheap as a space filler

Personally I work my prices out at a minimum of £200 per day. I then work out square meterage to see what works best. I find pricing jobs where there is a lot of scribing and cuts impossible to work out on a m2 , so revert back to day rate. Obviously large floors work out better on m2 than a day rate so change accordingly.

Daniel regarding tools don't go wading in buy the whole shebang in one go,yes buy stainless steel notched trowels believe genesis have a full set of these for around £40 may a little bit cheaper get a good quality level set stabila Id may preferred choice definitely get a top end cutting machine get the rest from screwfix to start with or even protiler tools then good from there

These day rate figures are in no way relation to the metre rates getting batted about..
I know £50/60 m2 or £180 day rate? so 3/4m2 a day , that tiler would be gone, the tortoise :)
Its all postcode is pricing imo, you will get the ofd person around lancashire charging £40/50m2 , but not many , id say the national average is around £35/45 inc materials , around burnley is probably around £25/35 inc and around £180 day rate , lads in some parts of Ireland are getting around €15/20 m2
