Our tile installer abandoned our new installation project. A smaller section of cut tile (approximately 11 3/4 inch by 2 inch) had broken loose before he left. It was installed on top of LVT flooring in the adjacent room without orange DITRA underneath.

When we pulled it all the way out there is dry white and dry grey substance essentially matching the dry grout in the fractured joint. This defect was on the list of "concerns" we had expressed prior to his departure. Now that we are attempting to figure out next steps in fixing our floor, I have a few questions:

  • does the white substance appear to be dry thin set?
  • is the grey a type of mortar that would be used to adhere tile to LVT? Or is the dried grey a blob of grout used to attempt to reaffix the broken piece?
  • If mortar material or blob of grout, are either of these appropriate practice for this installation?
  • should we remove the lvt and remount the piece on subfloor and ditra?? (We offered to remove the Ivt from the transition before they began...we didn't know what was best. Looks like they chose to install on top and it failed)
Thank you so much for any help!!
