I write this reply as it's 10 years since I had these porcelain floor tiles fitted as a work surface. There have been no issues and no staining on either the tiles or the epoxy grout.

I think more than a thou came off but the inner core of plaster is not showing.

Not if you seal the underside and edges. My existing kitchen is 35 years old, was made out of veneered chipboard, and hasn't fell to pieces yet. This includes two 18" tiled areas inset into the chipboard which shows no sign of swelling or crumbling.

timeless john, thanks for your info. I saw the tiles in B&Q which said "NOT suitable for food preparation areas" which is what prompted these discussions. I've been to 4 different tiling firms and they all say that porcelain is the way to go and a few did say not all are suitable. When swimbo...

I won't be putting adhesive on the top ply as I'll be using the backer board.

I think about 51mm. "You need to seal the underside of the ply." with what and why? "it would be cheaper and less labour intensive using a worktop" you mean the normal formica covered chipboard!

Can't the tile/ wood join be in silicone?

Other options such as granite, eco, or corian are too expensive and are highly susceptible to damage and staining. Wood, although not that expensive is high maintenance. Formica is the only other candidate.

Thanks timeless john, I've posted about this on this site. I went to Porcelanosa today and they assure me that any pure porcelain tile is food safe.
