Two rooms but no door separating. Would it look odd to have different tiles separated by expansion joint at the room divide?

Depends on how much of a difference between tiles.

Personally same tile right through, much nicer job.

same tile different colour may look ok, but 2 different tiles would look like you have run out of tiles, in my opinion

I always like to see a floor covering be continuous throughout, be it carpet, tile, laminate, vinyl etc, it's nice to see a flow.

it does look better in most situations if its the same but sometimes having a different floor can help define areas and give areas a better sence of purpose.

I have done it in the past, a couple of examples with home made expansion joints.

Like what you've done there Phil.

I'd prefer same tile, same colour throughout. Phil's examplw shows same tile different colour can work really well but i think any more difference than that wouldn't look right.

I did this in my house, kitchen in dark grey, hallway brown. Same tile just different colour. Looked fine IMO. I'd take a pic but it's covered over with laminate now!! Lol
