Hello all,
I’m tiling the bathroom and it currently has a typical new-build MDF window sill. I want to tile the sill and my question is:
Do I tile on the MDF or replace it with something. If I replace it, what would I use?

It’s a timber frame house so I’m assuming there will be a bit of wood and insulation beneath the MDF so what’s the best way to make good?

Secondly: should I move the toilet out to tile behind it or would you tile around it? See pic.

Thank you!

I'd move the loo forward and tile behind it. It always looks better. And you can still lift the lid off the cistern then.

The sill I'd perhaps cut the lip off so it's flush with the wall and then overboard it with a cement board and tank it? (Wait for the tilers to reply im not ofay with the new gear).

Having said that. It's not going to get water on it there. That's the basin isn't it not part of a shower (bottom left of pic). So perhaps just cut the sill flush and then sand the paint off, prime and tile it?

Again wait for the lads to reply.

Chop the front off and screw a cement board or foam board on top and it will be good to tile assuming it's solid. Alternative remove it and dot and dab plaster board on

Depends how much of the UPVC window surround will be left if you overboard it with 6mm backer board and tile. I always aim for an equal amount right the way round the window. It wouldn’t take much to pull the window board off and board out. Your call.

Remove and dot and dab plasterboard I've seen to many issues where window sills have been left in .

Thank you.... would this be plaster-faced plaster board or the paper-faced stuff. .... any particular type or thickness? Sorry for the basic questions.

Time's Ran Out

It’s the front of the sill that’s the issue. If you don’t take it out you’ll find it moves and will crack across the front of the tile.

I’ve seen it many times where builders have tried to cut corners by simply cutting the lip off flush, as said above any moisture at all blows the mdf so it’s a no brainer to remove it and build up with appropriate layers.
