I often point out to people that whatever the day rate is I will only likely get around 60-70% in my pocket. After basic costs like tax, fuel, van, accountancy costs, xero subscription, liability insurance and several other costs it takes the wow factor away from that so called decent day rate. Bare in mind your customer probably also gets 4 weeks holiday pay. If you fancy holiday pay for 4 weeks off {20 days) at £160 a day then you're going to have to save £13 odd over the other 240 work days to pay for it. Often forgotten.

Given you tilers arms access. And marked you as a pro tiler.

Hope it's alright to ask this. I'm not actually a tiler yet but hoping to get into the trade soon. Can someone explain to me why the differences in prices, I.e 30 per m2 for ceramic but 40 per m2 for natural stone or marble etc? And say 30 m2 for 10mm thick (example thickness) but 35 m2 over 10mm thick? Do these m2 prices include adhesive and grout etc?

Big difference, will take you longer to cut tiles and more labour intensive for starters, definitely at them prices would be labour only

This has all got to be based regionally...however I don't think for one minute someones getting away with charging 40-£50pm all day every day, that's going on £200k a year...lets be realistic eh

Based on 10-20m a day, which is being realistic, we must have some millionaires on here then..

If the world was perfect you would be correct on thinking £200000 a year but in the real world unless you are tiling football sized fields every day 7 days a week I would agree, unfortunately most jobs are smaller also include niches etc and consist of precision cuts especially as tiles are getting bigger and bigger.
Then you have to deduct grouting time included in the price, time and costs spent quoting, admin time, wear and tear on tools, / vehicle costs, public liability costs, accounting fees, etc etc.

Prices are based on experience, that's I know. Dont know anything about regional prices. It will take you the same amount of time to lay the darn tile wheather youre in Scotland or down south. Not trying to be smart *** here. Will give you an example here showing you some pictures, then you can do the guessing yourself.

These pict are more likely the high end, top jobs, whatever you wanna call it. Cost a little bit more. Depends on the job.

Cheers Andy. Seeing all the different views on it makes it sound slightly complicated to me. Although I'm sure once you know what your doing it really isn't. This is all new to me. Coming from a mechanics background so totally different to what I'm used to.

Thanks for the info. As I say this is all new to me and I'm hoping to a UK Pro tiling course soon. Apparently they tell you how to price jobs too so hopefully all this sort of stuff would be included. It's a bit daunting spending all the money the course is going to cost by time I've paid for travel and accommodation etc. I'm 350 mile away! Come from a mechanics background so this is completely not what I'm used to! Very keen to do it though!

Times have changed, and the trades know that all the cogs are required. Big money requires big wages at all levels.

I work a lot overseas for similar rates. The plus side is that wet areas are often fully tiled ( 25 to 30 mtr wall and floor) with large living areas 40 to 80 mtr so more area to lay although vinyl and wood effect floors are becoming fashionable too
