Although I've tiled my own bathroom and kitchen walls, I've never tiled a floor. A relative has asked me to tile his hall and kitchen floor. The only problem is that it means tiling onto old quarry tiles, many of which are loose and very uneven. He says that he'll get it sorted by using a self levelling screed. I'm not so sure as some of the high spots would mean a leveller thickness of over half an inch and in any case the loose tiles will still be loose underneath.

I've told him that if it was my house I'd lift the quarry tiles and put a new sand and cement screed down instead and maybe a damp proof membrane if required.

What do you think?

Cheers

If you remove the un-stuck ones, ensure you give the rest a wobble, level with a compound to a comfortable height and then any high bits smooth off with a rubbing stone.

Maybe that would get the floor tile-able?
