After seeing a topic about what apps people use on the job, I just wondered if anyone uses any design software or apps to design rooms?
I'm thinking most folk will just do what the customer has in mind, but also thought it wouldn't be a bad idea to have one to play about with.

@Paul C. used something to make something once. Can't remember whether it was sort of CAD related or photoshop type thing but he might be able to help you out with something to play around with.

TileGem 2.4 Download (Free) - TileGem.exe - http://tilegem.software.informer.com/2.4/ - Scan this before downloading. It's not a website I've heard of. The actual download link is lower down the page past the adverts that confusing say download too.

Home - TilePlanner EN - http://www.tileplanner.com/en/ - More of a pro thing. I think you can try it for free. It seems to be what tile companys use on their own websites.

TilePlanner - http://www.maticad.com/online_design_software - Don't know if this is free or what.

Computer Tile Layout 101 - Ceramic Tile Advice Forums - John Bridge Ceramic Tile - http://www.johnbridge.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=11683&highlight=software+layout - If you have photoshop, this kinda teaches you how to do something for a floor or whatever but it's old skool compared to 3D rooms.

The one I use is called Sketchup (30 day free trial of the pro version then the free Sketchup Make kicks in with only a few techy functions taken off).

There is also a free plugin called Twilight Render Hobby for doing the prettier 3d visuals.

Its fairly easy to use, but can be a little time consuming when try to apply tiles. You can do a texture in photoshop and apply it to the model, but I actually make each tiles as a component and effectively, tile the room. Good fun.

Great posts guys, thanks a lot!
I just think with me starting out fresh on my own, if I can show or offer clients some designs and visualisations it might give me a little edge on some of the competition - as well as giving me something to mess around with. Cheers!

I like the border in the window!

Hmmm..... Undecided, but thats what they want. They said I could have a go at tiling it for them, sticking to that design. Should be fun. They are way off being ready to having it done yet, so gives me time to knock up a frame and some hardie in that kind of shape, and practice before being let loose :)

Looks like a 3 way mitre there to so to avoid it use L-shaped metal trim or something.

That example looks ideal to something I'm looking for. Nothing too fancy but nothing too plain. I'll go download it and see how I get on. Fingers crossed lol.

Would you say you know enough to be able to teach someone how to use it Paul?

Probably the basics, yes. It is easier than autocad for doing layouts and there are loads of free plugins to make some of the more complicated tasks easier.

For what i want to use it for, basic tiling layouts, i've learnt a couple of ways of using it, but every time i switch it on, i'm learning something new. But should know enough to rustle up a guide of how i do it. When i have time, i will try and rustle up a few step-by-step screenshots a stick a new thread up.
