Does anyone ever get https://www.tilersforums.com/forums/tile-adhesive/ shrinking?

Let’s say you tile half a wall, go back the next day to tile the rest and once the second lot of tiles has set, it’s shrunk back ever so slightly.

I’m not talking about a thick bed of https://www.tilersforums.com/forums/tile-adhesive/ either. Or too much water in the mix.

I’m wondering if levelling clips would help to prevent this.

Just thinking out loud. No major issue with shrinkage, I just wondered if anyone else has noticed it much.

Cheers for the reply...

Just ordered 5000 clips. I have a friend who’s a Tiler and he has a birthday coming up ;) ;)

On a serious note. You’d think something like this shouldn’t happen in this day and age with modern adhesives.

One Day

With consistent troweling and bed depth it would be minimal.
Bedding up different depths = different shrinkage.
Spot fixing = major shrinkage differences.

This is one of the reasons why clips exist, not to turn amateurs in to pros, like the uneducated would have you believe.

Talking of modern adhesives, Bio can suffer shrinkage more than you would want to believe.
#juatsayin!!

Everything is becoming over engineered, and too finely balanced on a knifes edge.

I’ve used a lot of Biogel this year. It does shrink a little, to an extent anyway. We are talking a fraction of a Millimetre. Only really noticeable on rectified tiles.

I hadn’t actually considered that about clips until recently so thanks for confirming it.

.........confirming that I’m uneducated :tearsofjoy:

This is something i've been trying to get my head round recently, but only because of a differnt effect. Crazing.

People have been using all makes 150x75, 200x100 and 300x100 of class BIII (absorbtion >10%) in kitchens and bathrooms. They start to craze immediately after install. Of all the cases i've looked into, a cement based adheve has been used and around 90% of those have been rapidset or semi rapid. But of course you speak to the manufacturers and the tell you the https://www.tilersforums.com/forums/tile-adhesive/ can't be to blame (tilemaster, bal, weber and palace) . Can't do much but take their word for it but i'm not convinced. Never seen it happen with readymixed

Does isomat suffer any shrinkage marc? considering it takes 8 litres of water to 25kg ?

I tried Tilemaster Lightweight last week. That takes 8 to 9 litres of water per 15kg of powder. I found it shrunk quite a lot. Tried a few adhesives recently. I don’t think there is a perfect one.

I’m still keen to try Isomat gear.

I think with some of the newer adhesives that have recycled materials added to it and using more water would create shrinkage if some sorts

Just noticed first hand how much Biogel shrinks. This happened on very porous ceramics.

Funnily enough I had a bag of Magix with the same tiles and it didn’t shrink at all.

I’m still not convinced that Biogel is the wonder https://www.tilersforums.com/forums/tile-adhesive/ that people go on about. Sure it does mix up nicely and clean up is a breeze but with the shrinkage and that ultra long set time, I don’t think it’s for me.

I feel a little bit like I’m in tile https://www.tilersforums.com/forums/tile-adhesive/ limbo at the moment. Need to find a go to https://www.tilersforums.com/forums/tile-adhesive/.
