Mapei Ultraplan Renovation Screed - what primer sticks to IT ?? - Tile Advice

Mapei Ultraplan Renovation Screed is quite new to me, but what primer sticks to IT...
- Mapei ECO-PRIM-T ... just peels off in ribbons
- SBR-OPC slurry ... just peels off in a sheet


Primer is for...
- Second SLC pour - eg, thin SLC+Mapenet just for surface reinforcement
- Pre Marmox - eg, before using Keraflex addy


Q - What primers stick to it - anyone PROVEN that ECO PRIM GRIP works ??


(I thought ECO-PRIM-GRIP was just a pre-mix SBR-slurry and Planicrete was just SBR)




Q - Likewise SHOULD I want to consolidate the surface can I use Primer MF? This SLC is a bit like teflon compared to some.

Yes, always...
- Mapei Eco Prim T ... 1:1-water (clean water, clean buckets)
- SBR + OPC ... 1:1-water:3-cement (adjusted for a cream slurry)

They have quite poor adhesion (<1N/mm2 easily).
That said a test area shows Keraflex does bond ok, perhaps I am expecting a bit much.

Likewise beware any SBR based paints or SBR based DPM repair systems (they will not stick to Ultraplan and just peel off). I stick to Mapei ESM as DPM or DPM repair for this reason (better shear performance too).

I would wager something stronger than Epo Grip T may be needed...
- Mapei Ultraplan Screed 11mm measured
- Mapei Epo Grip T Primer 1:1
- Keraflex w/6mm trowel
- Marmox 6mm


Failure was delamination at the primer.
The Ultraplan flows magically and is wonderfully smooth, really super stuff. However primers don't sink in well and instead bind only to the top most super fine particles which separate easily from the fibres. Delamination DID require mechanical force, but really not much - my historic concern always with Marmox is getting proper solid coverage (back buttering).


The bond was noticeably better on Level-IT screed, BUT that is really quite substantially inferior in terms of flowing & mechanical performance compared to Ultraplan. So I might go with a different SLC just for under Marmox when the floor is rough.


The alternative may simply be ECO-PRIM-GRIP which is stickier than sticky stuff in a very sticky situation.


Hmmm... could I have got a mix (part bag as it happens on the test area) with overly more fibres in that area hence making delamination easier? Scrub the surface slightly and it feels like entirely dense vertical fibres. Was mixed properly (electric paddle), just not an entire bag (15kg I'd say). It used to be grout that was notorious for re dry mixing to ensure proper colour & mix... have I been bitten by not mixing a full bag?
