Hi there,

My wife and I are doing our basement and purchased tile through a reputable company who did the install. They finished today and I am not very pleased with the results and am looking for some opinions on the quality of the work.

We were told this tile is not grouted, yet as you can see in the pictures it was, with a grout we did not pick. At the butt end of the tile at the corners, the grout it the width of my thumb. Is this typically how this style would be installed? Or is it poor workmanship?

Thank you for your advice and opinions.

Those tiles have not been grouted....the butt ends are showing adhesive (thin set to you) which the tiles have been fixed in. The internal corners are showing the same.

Personally, you have picked a very awkward tile for a splashback as cleaning will be ten fold difficult because of the face surface you have chosen.

I have no sympathy at all.

It is not the adhesive / thin set showing. I've attached a picture of before it was grouted. To me, it looked better before hand.

In hindsight, it may not have been the ideal tile choice for the backsplash, luckily it's only for a small dry bar in the basement so cleaning won't be a huge issue. My concern is how the corners were installed. For a tile like this, is it not possible to cut at a 45 degree angle so the inside corner is flush and there is less of a gap? The sale's rep told us this was the case and the sample photos it also appeared that way.

Thanks again

The corner should have been mitred. Did you have the supplier install or did you hire the tiler yourself? Did you ask for the corner to be mitred?
A strange choice of grout colour whoever's choice that was anyway.

We had the company that supplied the tile do the installation. We did ask for it mitered and were under the impression it would be done that way as the sample in the show room had been done that way.

The supervisor / quality control is coming to our home on Monday. We were looking for opinions on if the corner was done correctly or if we have a case for them to redo it. They are a reputable company in our city and did a beautiful job on the rest of the house so I hope the inspector thinks this portion was done incorrectly.

Thank you for your feedback.

Yes the internal corners should have been finished better, white thinset should have been used for install not grey and white used to finish seen edges. Nice stone!

Those corners don't look mitred either.
